Capture the Colour 2013

Capture the Colour is a photo blogging challenge launched by Travel Supermarket.  The challenge is to publish a blog featuring five of the blogger’s favorite travel photographs which best capture the five color categories: red, blue, green, yellow and white.  Bloggers who enter the Capture the Colour contest also nominate five other bloggers to enter as well.

Thank you so much to Ari of Beyond Blighty for nominating me.  I have been following Ari’s adventurous escapades, and am honored she has been reading about my travels as well.  Ari’s entry includes some fabulous pictures.  Her yellow entry, a woman in yellow as seen through a bed of reeds in Lake Titcaca, seems to be the favorite, but I also love her red entry, a colorful crab from the Galapagos Islands.

Here are some of my favorite photographs from my travels around the world.  I hope you enjoy them!

Red

Capture the Colour Red - Bruges Canal

Belgium is one of the most beautiful countries we have visited.  Belgium has delicious beer, sparkling diamonds, and gorgeous cities, some with canals.  Bruges is like a fairytale land, colorful, cheerful, clean, and yet old.  It just doesn’t seem real.  One of my favorite photos from Bruges is of this canal with the boats and flowers and buildings.  I love the red window frames, shutters and doors, plus the flower pots, boat seats, and, of course, the national flag.

Blue

Capture the Colour Blue - Sugar Cane Refinery Belize

Sugar cane farming, production, and export are huge in Northern Belize.  It was quite an unusual sight for us to see trucks carrying enormous loads of sugar cane on the road.  On a boat trip back from the Mayan ruins of Lamanai we saw this sugar cane refinery.  I love the look of the bright and rusty metals against the blue sky, and their reflections in the water.

Green

Capture the Colour Green - Long-Tail Boat Thailand

This is one of my most favorite pictures from Thailand.  While kayaking Phang Nga Bay’s karsts we came upon this beautiful long-tail boat.  I just had to snap a picture as we went gliding by, and was so excited I actually got it all in the shot.  Again, I love how the green of the water and foliage work in the background to highlight the beauty of one of Thailand’s iconic images.

Yellow

Capture the Colour Yellow - Marble Streets of Rovinj Croatia

Croatia is another country that warms my heart.  We stayed in Rovinj, on the Istrian peninsula, the land of delicious food and truffles galore!  I loved the smooth, shiny marble streets, especially at night when they reflected the glowing lights in a way that almost made them look wet. We ate dinner one night at a restaurant on this tiny street just around the corner from our hotel.  The restaurant placed tiny votive candles along the side across the way and those along with the yellow reflections of light on the marble created a warm and romantic atmosphere.

White

Capture the Colour White - Washington D.C. Tidal Basin Cherry Blossoms and Washington Monument

This may be one of my favorite photographs of all time.  We were lucky enough to have been able to plan our trip to Washington D.C. to correspond with the peak bloom of the cherry blossoms along the Tidal Basin.  It was a very cold and overcast day, and the cherry blossoms were mostly white, with just tiny patches of pink.  I was taking photos of the cherry blossoms and the Washington Monument when all of a sudden the monument went from drab to glowing white.  The opening in the clouds must have been above me, because there wasn’t a patch of blue sky in sight.

Now for my nominations.  Unfortunately, I have not left these bloggers much time, as entries must be submitted by October 9.  Hopefully at least one of them will be able to enter in time.
I cyber-met Cindy when we were both competing in the Five Days in Queensland contest, which sadly neither of us won.  She is a very busy woman who travels every six weeks to maintain her sanity.

Freya of Holiday Nomad
Freya writes a travel and photo blog and, like me, is a travel lover with a full-time job.  Also, she was born and raised in the beautiful Belgium!

Sam and Pete of Traveling King
Sam and Pete are also travelers with a mortgage.  I identify with their wish to enjoy the finer things in life at an affordable cost.
Kat is one of the first travel bloggers I started following when I started Travel the World.  I began following her travels to The Gambia, and have continued to follow along since.
Cathy is a self-proclaimed “boomer woman travel enthusiast.” I am envious of her recent cooking class in Emilia-Romagna.
